The SPARK Method
Universal first-response diagnostic — cheapest tests first
Spark
FreePull plug, ground to head, kick — blue spark? Check kill switch, coil, plug cap.
Petrol (Fuel)
FreeFresh fuel? Tank vent clear? Fuel reaching carb/injector? Try a teaspoon in the plug hole.
Air
FreeAir filter clean? Intake boot sealed? Spray carb cleaner around joints — RPM change = leak.
Recoil/Compression
$0–20 (gauge)Kick feel soft? Compression test: 4T 100+ psi, 2T 120+ psi. Low = top-end rebuild.
Kill switch
FreeKill switch or side-stand switch shorted? Disconnect and try — common no-start cause.
Carburetor Diagnosis Flow
Carbureted bikes mix air and fuel mechanically — no electronics. Most issues are fuel/air ratio or blockage.
- 1.Is fuel reaching the carb? (Check tank vent, petcock, fuel line)
- 2.Is fuel in the float bowl? (Drain screw — fuel should run out)
- 3.Is the pilot jet clear? (Hold up to light — tiny hole must be visible)
- 4.Is the float height correct? (Measure per manual — typically fuel just below gasket)
- 5.Is the air screw in range? (1.5 turns out is baseline — adjust for best idle)
- 6.Is the main jet correct? (Read plug: tan = right, white = lean, black = rich)
- 7.Is the needle in the right position? (Clip position affects mid-range)
Fuel Injection Diagnosis Flow
FI bikes self-diagnose — always check the MIL (check engine light) first. The ECU controls fuel, spark, and timing.
- 1.Turn key ON — does the fuel pump prime? (2-sec hum = OK, silence = pump/relay issue)
- 2.Check the MIL for blink codes (see FI Code Reference — count the blinks)
- 3.Look up the code — is it a sensor (TPS, MAP, CPS) or actuator (injector, coil)?
- 4.Check battery voltage — FI needs 12.4V+ (low voltage = false codes and no-start)
- 5.For sensor codes: check wiring first (chafe near stator cover is #1), then sensor resistance
- 6.For no codes but won't start: check crank position sensor (no RPM = no fuel/spark)
- 7.Clear codes after repair (disconnect battery 10 min or use code reader if available)
2-Stroke vs 4-Stroke
What's different — and why it matters for diagnosis
| Topic | 2-Stroke | 4-Stroke |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Premix or autolube (oil in fuel) | Straight gas + separate oil sump |
| Oil check | Trans oil only (check level, not color) | Engine oil (check level AND change regularly) |
| Top-end life | 10–50 hrs (piston + rings) | 60–200+ hrs (piston + rings + valves) |
| Common failure | Seizure (lean/no oil), fouled plug | Valve recession, oil consumption |
| Power delivery | Hit (power valve opens = surge) | Linear torque curve |
| Starting | Kick (usually no e-start) | E-start common, kick backup |
| Weight | Lighter (no valves, cams, oil pump) | Heavier (more moving parts) |
| Rebuild cost | Cheaper (simpler top end) | Expensive (valves, shims, cams) |

Chinese Pit Bike Spotlight
Lifan, SSR, GPX, TaoTao — the most cloned engines on Earth
Chinese pit bikes use Honda-architecture clone engines — the Lifan 125 is a direct descendant of the 1970s Honda XL125S. Parts are dirt-cheap and interchangeable across brands (SSR, Apollo, Kayo, TaoTao all use the same engine). The #1 maintenance item on ALL of them is valve clearance — check every 300 miles.

FI Code Reference
Fuel injection fault codes for Honda, Yamaha, KTM, and Kawasaki — read the MIL, look up the code
PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection)
How to read: Turn key ON. The MIL (red light on gauge) will blink. Long blinks = 10s, short blinks = 1s. Code 12 = 1 long + 2 short. Read codes with the bike in neutral, side stand up.
| Code | Meaning | What to check / action |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | No fault — system OK | Look elsewhere (fuel, spark, mechanical) |
| 1 | O2 sensor (lambda) — if equipped | Check sensor wiring and heater resistance |
| 7–8 | IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor | Check sensor resistance (~2.5kΩ at 20°C) |
| 9 | IAT sensor — high voltage/open | Inspect connector and wiring |
| 10–11 | MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor | Check vacuum hose, sensor voltage (5V ref, 1–4V signal) |
| 12 | No RPM signal — crank position sensor | Check sensor resistance (~500Ω) and wiring near stator cover |
| 13–14 | TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) | Calibrate per manual (typically 0.5V closed throttle) |
| 21–22 | VTEC/electronic valve — if equipped | Rare on dirt bikes — check solenoid |
| 23 | Knock sensor — if equipped | Check sensor resistance and mounting torque |
| 29 | IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) | Clean with contact cleaner, check for sticking |
| 33–34 | FI relay / ECM power supply | Check relay (should click at key-on), fuses, battery voltage |
| 54 | Bank angle sensor (tip-over) | Reset by turning key off then on — bike must be upright |
| Blinking continuous | Cannot communicate with ECM | Check ECM ground, battery voltage (12.4V+), main fuse |
Rebuild Procedures
Tune-up, top-end rebuild (2T & 4T), and full bottom-end rebuild — step by step
Tools needed
Feeler gauges, spark plug socket, oil drain pan, JASO MA oil, air filter oil
Steps
- 1Change engine oil and filter (warm engine first — drains better)
- 2Check and adjust valve clearance (cold engine — see spec sheet)
- 3Replace or clean and re-gap spark plug (check gap with feeler gauge)
- 4Clean and oil air filter (use filter oil, not motor oil — it flows off)
- 5Check and adjust clutch cable free play (2–3mm at lever)
- 6Check and lubricate chain (clean, then apply chain lube — not WD-40)
- 7Check tire pressure and chain/sprocket wear
- 82-stroke: verify oil mix ratio and premix fresh fuel
- 9Carbureted: sync idle screw (warm engine, set to spec RPM)
When: Every 600 mi / 20 hrs / 6 months (whichever comes first). Race bikes: every 5–15 hrs.
