Compression Testing
Use a compression gauge to decide if the engine can still seal and make power.

Ignition Systems: From Magneto to Spark
How a flywheel magneto makes tens of thousands of volts, why timing matters, and the small number of parts that cause nearly all no-spark faults.
A magneto generates its own power — no battery needed. Moving magnets induce voltage in a coil, and a transistorized module switches the primary circuit to collapse the field and fire the plug. Timing on most small engines is **fixed by the flywheel key's position**. That is why a partially sheared key mimics a dozen other faults.

Two-Stroke Engines: More Power, Less Forgiveness
How a two-stroke completes the cycle in one revolution, why premix is non-negotiable, and the failure modes that punish small mistakes severely.
A two-stroke fires **every revolution**, roughly doubling the power events of a four-stroke of the same size and speed — which is why it dominates handheld and kart applications. It has **no oil sump**: lubrication arrives dissolved in the fuel. Straight-gassing destroys the engine in minutes.
Premium module
Diagnostic Method: Thinking Like a Professional
A structured approach to fault-finding that replaces parts-swapping with evidence — including the misdiagnoses that cost the most money.
Test in **cost order**: free checks before cheap parts before expensive parts before teardown. The sequence alone saves most of the money. Every running engine needs **compression, mixture, and spark at the right time**. Establish which one is missing before forming any theory.

Fasteners, Torque, and Why Small Engines Strip Threads
Why torque specifications exist, how aluminum changes the rules, and the assembly practices that prevent leaks, warping, and stripped threads.
Torque is a **proxy for clamping force**, and an imperfect one — most of your effort goes into overcoming friction, not stretching the bolt. Small engines are largely **aluminum**, which has far lower thread strength than steel. Specifications are lower and the margin for error is smaller.

Marine Cooling Systems & Corrosion
Impeller is the #1 wear item — replace annually for saltwater Never run an outboard dry — impeller destroys in seconds
Premium module
Snow & Cold Weather Engine Operation
Cold fuel doesn't vaporize — choke compensates, fresh winter-blend fuel helps Use winter-weight oil (5W-30 synthetic) — SAE 30 won't flow cold
Premium module
Generator Power Quality & Sizing
Inverter generators produce clean power (<3% THD) — safe for electronics Conventional generators are fine for motors and lights but risky for electronics
Premium module
Construction Equipment Engine Fundamentals
Dust is the #1 killer of construction engines — air filter service is survival, not optional Check filters daily in concrete/demolition dust, every 8-24 hours on normal sites
Premium module
Engine Electrical Systems & Charging
Three systems: starting (battery→starter), ignition (magneto→coil→plug), charging (stator→rectifier→battery) 90% of electrical problems are bad grounds or corrosion — clean connections first
Premium module
Fastener Science & Torque Principles
Bolts are springs — torque creates stretch that creates clamping force Under-torque = loose, leak, failure; over-torque = broken bolt, stripped threads

Engine Oil: The Lifeblood of Small Engines
A deep technical reference on lubricating oil for small engines — chemistry, viscosity grading, additive packages, degradation mechanisms, condition diagnosis, and why oil choice makes or breaks an engine.
Oil performs five simultaneous functions: film lubrication, heat transfer, contaminant suspension, ring sealing, and corrosion protection — when one degrades, the others follow. Oil 'wears out' because its additive package (detergents, dispersants, anti-wear agents, antioxidants) is consumed, not because the base stock fails.
Premium module
Marine Engine Cooling Systems
Raw-water vs closed-loop cooling and the overheat checklist.
Premium module
Electrical Systems: Stators & Regulators
Diagnosing charging-system faults that cause dead batteries and no electric start.
Premium module
Two-Stroke Power Valves & Expansion Chambers
Power valves vary exhaust port timing with RPM for broad power Expansion chambers use sonic waves to supercharge the cylinder
